Important differences to know when serving at Woburn High, it is different from 35 Olympia, and therefore different from what you are used to!
KEY POINTS:
- Children gather at a table by GRADE. As the Small Group / Table Leader, you will likely be the only adult overseeing these children.
- The Lead Teacher is responsible for the LARGE GROUP lesson. This is when you bring your table to the TV area for worship song, story video, and object lesson. Your role during this time is to help monitor behaviors and keep you children together.
- When you return to the table, you are responsible for leading the children in the activity provided. It is It is CRITICAL that you have read the lesson and know what is expected of you on Sunday.
DETAILS:
- Small Group Table Leads (SGL’s) in the K-4th grade area are assigned by Jennabeth - You will see your name listed in the lesson that is emailed to you on Tuesday of the week you are serving. Look to see which grade you will serving. You are responsible for the part of the lesson she has assigned you to (as the small group table LEAD). Make sure you are familiar with both the bible story AND the activity that you will conduct at your table.
- You are responsible for the kids at your table (not the lead teacher, who in this setting is leading the large group). This means you will:
- Check them in on the clipboard roster,
- Engage with them when they arrive (use the activities in the box at your table, but not the activity designed to reinforce the lesson - save that for after the large lesson),
- Bring your table to the large group teaching and stay with your group during the large lesson (there will be a colored grade indicator for you to sit on with your group), and
- Lead them in the follow up activity back at the table after the large group teaching,
- Help to check them out.
- You may be alone as a leader at the table, or you may have others on the team with you to help you lead, therefore you need to be prepared to conduct the activity and engage with the kids, “as if” you are the only person there.
- Greeting and being friendly with the parents at drop off and pick up are important! Parents need to be confident that they are leaving their kids in caring hands and so engaging with parents is a relationship/trust builder!
- If you see a behavior that needs addressing, address it. Follow the lead of the CORE Team leaders and coordinators if you are unsure something should be redirected. In this new environment some kids will test the limits BUT will have the most fun when the boundaries are clear and followed through on. We as the adults need to set the example and expectation for the kids we lead.
- Nursery age group 0-4 year olds will be towards the back of the Early Childhood space. These two groups will technically be in the “same space.” PLEASE be super conscientious of babies and toddlers and stay with them if they crawl into the 2-4 space to explore. Both age groups are quite intereseted in each other and so these two groups can almost function as one, with the Lead teacher teaching the book lesson to any of the children who are able to listen.
- Nursery leaders (0-4) need to ensure that when checking children in, their tag “code” is added to the sign in sheet. Please also get permission from the parent that the child can or cannot have puffs. There is a column for both of these items on the sign in sheet.
- ALL - Arrive early for parking concerns. It is helpful if you park at our overflow Elementary school on Bow St. It is critical that you arrive early to park in order to join the Huddle. We need each and every team member that has been scheduled, each week. Your presence and engagement is super important! The Huddles will give you last minute updates as we coordinate any details on a Sunday morning at Woburn High.
FINAL REMINDERS:
We model as we serve. Everything we do we learn by watching others, so do the children! It is so important to model Christ in our words and actions. Watch as your CORE Team leaders and GK Lead teachers serve. They are modeling for you how to love and serve with excellence. The lesson is the structure for the morning, but what you do in relationship with each child on Sunday is the REAL ministry of serving with kids.
REMEMBER that for our lead teachers who are teaching the big group lesson, teaching a group of K-4th graders is MUCH different than teaching a group of children who are all in the same age/grade (which is what we are used to from 35 Olympia). Support the Lead Teacher while he/she teaches the large group lesson so that they can effectively share the Gospel and we can help the large group of kids to participate appropriately. Don’t allow distractions to take the message from the moment we have with children.
